Venerable Matt Talbot was proclaimed Venerable on October 3rd, 1975, by Pope Paul VI. Matt began drinking in his youth and for the next 15 years was an active alcoholic. Matt took "the pledge", a vow to stay sober for 3 months. Matt's three months became years of penance in which he repaid all debts, made amends and engaged in a strict regimen of fasting and prayer for his past wasted years. Matt went to church daily, prayed consistently including the Rosary and dedicated his life to helping others recover. 40 years after he took the pledge, Matt died on the way to church of a heart attack.
Matt Talbot lived the remainder of his life in service to God and others.
Matt Talbot, pray for us.
