Saint Francis St Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) was not a priest but became devoted to Christ after he was held as a prisoner of war at 20 years old. After his release he began to see visions of Jesus and renounced his former opulent and frivolous life and started the Friars Minor which became the Franciscans. Francis had a devotion to animals and regarded them as his brothers and sisters. He preached to them, cared for them and held them in high regard as creations of God deserving good treatment and respect. Francis wrote, " If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men".
